Functional Massage

Consultation and Assessment

The session begins with a consultation to identify specific areas of tension, discomfort, or pain, allowing the therapist to tailor the massage to your unique requirements.

Relaxation and Environment Setup

As you settle onto the massage table, the environment is carefully designed to induce relaxation, with calming music, dim lighting, and a comfortable setting.

A main aspect of our functional massage is myofascial unwinding. This is a gentle, body-led therapeutic technique designed to:

  • Release deep fascial restrictions that may not be accessible through direct manipulation.
  • Encourage spontaneous movement initiated by the body’s own innate intelligence.
  • Facilitate somatic awareness, allowing individuals to connect with and process stored tension, trauma, or emotional holding patterns.
  • Restore natural movement patterns by releasing compensations and restrictions in the fascial and muscular systems.
  • Support the nervous system in transitioning from a state of protection (fight/flight/freeze) to one of regulation and rest.

Unwinding often occurs as the body is gently supported and given the space to move in whichever way it needs—twisting, stretching, shaking, or pausing—without force or predetermined direction. It is not imposed by the practitioner but allowed and followed.

Benefits of Myofascial Unwinding include:

  1. Deep Fascial Release
Unlike traditional massage or direct myofascial release, unwinding accesses layers of fascia that may be bound due to old injuries, postural habits, or emotional stress.
  2. Emotional and Somatic Integration
Fascia can store emotional and traumatic imprints. Unwinding can bring these to the surface in a safe and embodied way.
  3. Nervous System Regulation
The slow, non-invasive nature of unwinding can calm the sympathetic nervous system, supporting a parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) state. This helps reduce anxiety, stress, and hypervigilance.
  4. Improved Mobility and Flexibility
As fascial tension patterns are released, joint movement often becomes freer and more fluid, with less muscular compensation and stiffness.
  5. Pain Relief
Chronic tension patterns and myofascial trigger points may resolve when the surrounding fascial web relaxes. Many clients report reduced pain after unwinding sessions.
  6. Enhanced Body Awareness and Mindfulness
Because the client is invited to notice and follow inner sensations and movements, unwinding enhances proprioception and body-mind connection.
  7. Release of Holding Patterns
Whether from physical trauma (like whiplash), emotional stress, or habitual posture, unwinding helps dissolve compensatory patterns and restore the body’s natural balance.
  8. Support for Healing and Recovery
It is often used alongside other therapies in the rehabilitation of injury, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, or trauma recovery—particularly when hands-on pressure or more forceful techniques are too intense

Deep Tissue Massage (if requested)

For those seeking more intense relief, deep tissue massage techniques are applied to address chronic tension and release deeply embedded knots, promoting muscle flexibility and relaxation.

Joint Mobilisation

The therapist employs gentle movements to enhance joint flexibility and reduce stiffness, contributing to improved overall mobility and functionality.

Stress Reduction and Relaxation Techniques

Calming techniques, such as effleurage and soothing strokes, are incorporated to reduce stress, anxiety, and promote a sense of overall relaxation.

Integration of Stretching Techniques

The therapist may include assisted stretching to further enhance flexibility, release tension, and contribute to improved posture.

Closing and Aftercare Recommendation

The session concludes with gentle techniques to gradually bring you back to the present moment. The therapist may provide aftercare recommendations, such as hydration and stretches, to prolong the benefits of the massage.
